The Wind Tunnel Testing Division is an important branch division of the State Key Laboratory for Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering, and  has established cooperating and exchanging relations with wind engineering researchers in the United States, Japan, Canada, Germany and other countries.

There are totally six atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnels in WTTD, and a brief description is given below:


TJ-1 wind tunnel is a boundary layer wind tunnel of open-circuit with testing section being 1.8m wide, 1.8m high and 12m long and wind velocity ranging from 1.0m/s to 30m/s, adjustable continuously. It is possible to conduct model tests on bridge section models, single-body tall building, high-rise structures, and wind-rain induced vibration of cables. 


TJ-2 wind tunnel, a closed-circuit boundary layer wind tunnel, is a multifunctional tunnel for buildings and auto models, having a testing section of 3m wide, 2.5m high and 15m long with wind velocity ranging from 1.0m/s to 68m/s, adjustable continuously. TJ-2 is suitable for investigating the aerodynamics of building structures, bridge section models, vehicles and boats, and other relevant fields of tests as well.


TJ-3 wind tunnel is among the largest ones in the world with a working section of 15m wide, 2m high, and 14m long and wind velocity ranging from 1.0m/s to 17.6m/s, adjustable continuously. It can be used to carry out the tests on full bridge aeroelastic models for super long-span bridges exceeding 2,000m, wind load tests for long-span roof structures, as well as tests of environment, diffusion, etc..


Equipped with a Partice Image Velocimetry (PIV), TJ-4 wind tunnel is a boundary layer wind tunnel of close circuit with testing section being 0.8m wide, 0.8m high and 0.5m long and wind velocity ranging from 1.0m/s to 30m/s, adjustable continuously. The main purpose of TJ-4 is for academic researchers about the mechanisms of wind-induced vibration and its control, and detailed fundamental studies on special wind-excited phenomena.


TJ-5 wind tunnel is the first tornado simulator in China, which is a reflux simulator with a open platform. It can be used for studies of tornado characteristics and their effects on structures.


TJ-6 wind tunnel is the first multi-fan active control wind tunnel in China with testing section being 1.5m wide, 1.8m high and 10m long. It is suitable for simulations of sepcial flows with high turbulence, integral scale, non-stationary and strong trimming characteristics.
